All men incarcerated in the general housing units of Stateville Correctional Center have been transferred to other facilities as of Friday, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Some backstory:

Here’s where things now stand:

  • As of Friday, there were still 24 people housed in Stateville’s Health Care Unit.

  • According to the order, they do not need to be transferred as it’s a separate housing building that “does not exhibit the risks of falling concrete that exists in the general housing units.”

  • What remains in limbo is the future of workers after Stateville fully closes.

Man Injured by Driver Chased by Chicago Police Might Get $1.75 Million From City

(Michael Izquierdo / WTTW News)

(Michael Izquierdo / WTTW News)

City lawyers are recommending that Chicago taxpayers should pay $1.75 million to a man who was injured by a driver fleeing Chicago police. It would resolve another lawsuit prompted by a crash caused by a police pursuit.

What happened:

  • Eddie Banks Jr. was severely and permanently injured on July 5, 2018 while driving through the intersection of 83rd Street and Stony Island Avenue. T he was struck by a vehicle driven by John Tinker, who was fleeing police.

  • Court records show the city sued Tinker, seeking to force him to pay damages to Banks, blaming him for the pursuit that injured Banks. It is unclear whether that effort was successful, and a spokesperson for the Chicago Department of Law did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Some backstory:

  • The department changed its policy for vehicle pursuits in August 2020. That policy now requires officers to “consider the need for immediate apprehension of an eluding suspect and the requirement to protect the public from the danger created by eluding offenders” and ensures that no officer could be disciplined for terminating a pursuit.

  • Chicago taxpayers spent $74.4 million since 2019 to resolve lawsuits sparked by police pursuits, with the city’s insurance coverage paying an additional $25 million according to an analysis of city data by WTTW News.

Listen, we know it’s too early to be talking about Christmas. It’s even too soon to celebrate Halloween (unless you’re doing a month-long horror film marathon). Still, Chicago’s already getting into the holiday spirit by announcing that the city is looking for its official tree and we have the details on the requirements and nomination process

Also, the Christkindlmarket has announced the return of its popular boot-shaped mug in 2024, after a five-year absence. It's got a “sleek black exterior with a warm red interior, adorned with cozy market scenes and holiday-themed designs,” according to organizers. Take a peek here.

Back in the Day: October 1, 1999 - Former Chicago City Treasurer Begins Prison Sentence

Miriam Santos was the first Latinx politician to hold a citywide elected office in Chicago. She served as city treasurer from 1989 to 1999. Though Mayor Richard M. Daley appointed her, she stood up to him when she alerted the public to the city’s mismanagement of pension funds in the early 1990s. Her 1999 reelection was successful despite Santos being under federal indictment for mail fraud and attempted extortion. On this day 25 years ago, Santos, who was forced to resign, began serving a 40-month prison sentence. This isn’t where her story ends though. In 2000, just four months into her stint, Santos’ conviction was overturned and she reclaimed her old elected position with back pay. Still, six months after that she had to resign and plead guilty to a single count of mail fraud rather than go to prison once again. She retired from public life soon after.
