Anjanette Young appears on “Chicago Tonight” on Oct. 28, 2024. (WTTW News)

Anjanette Young is still waiting for reform in Chicago. During a botched CPD raid in February 2019, Young, a social worker, was handcuffed while naked as officers searched her apartment and ignored her dozens of statements that they were at the wrong home.
Here’s some of what Young had to say:
On CPD accountability:
“Individuals like myself and other family members, who are the ones that are being harmed by this timing, is an issue. With Laquan McDonald, it’s been 10 years. For myself, it’s been five years, and yet we are still waiting for some tangible action from the consent decree.”
On the consent decree:
“When we think about Laquan McDonald and how he was murdered in the street and shot 16 times so aggressively by the Chicago Police Department, and then, yet, even just this year, we had (Dexter) Reed. That young man was shot (at) 96 times in 41 seconds. That’s so excessive, and so to see police officers still
harming the community the way they have is not seeing any tangible change, although they’re reporting in the data that there has been some change.”
On Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration:
“I’m very disappointed at this time. When I chose to support Brandon Johnson as a candidate for mayor, he and I specifically talked about what that would mean for me and for me to publicly support him, and I shared with him my desire and my passion and my commitment to making change around the way the police interact with the Black and Brown community. And those things haven’t happened yet, and Mayor Johnson is now in his second year, actually going into his third year, and
nothing tangible has happened.”

A key Chicago City Council panel advanced the nominations of five Chicagoans picked by Mayor Brandon Johnson to serve on the board of the Regional Transportation Authority, which is facing a a $730 million deficit in 2026.
The endorsement of the city’s Transportation and Public Way Committee sends the nominations of Natasha Jenkins, Thomas Kotarac, Jarixon Medina, Dennis J. Mondero and Nora Cay Ryan to the full Chicago City Council for confirmation. That vote could come as soon as Wednesday.
If confirmed, the five nominees would represent Chicago on the 16-member board for five years. Board members earn $25,000 annually and meet once per month. The RTA board will be asked to address that massive budget gap, which has sparked proposals to merge the Chicago area’s three separate public transit agencies — the CTA, suburban bus system Pace and commuter rail system Metra — into a single agency.

Back in the Day: October 30, 1984 - Michael Jordan Scores 37 Points in 3rd NBA Game
|
Playing in only his third NBA game, Chicago Bulls rookie Michael Jordan scored 37 points on this day forty years ago in 1984. He showed his untouchable clutch instinct early in his career, tallying 22 points in the fourth quarter alone to rally his team to beat the Milwaukee Bucks 116-110. He scored 13 of his team’s final 17 points and hit the game-winning shot with 31 seconds left on the clock. By the end of the season, Jordan would finish an impressive sixth in MVP voting and would edge out his future rival (and No. 1 pick in the 1984 draft) Hakeem Olajuwon to win Rookie of the Year. WTTW News doesn’t need to tell you how the rest of Jordan’s magnificent career would
go.
